Restoring Comfort and Improving Quality of Life Through Advanced Cancer Pain Management

At Hope Oncology & Surgical Center, we believe that cancer care goes beyond treating the disease. It also means relieving suffering, managing pain, and helping patients maintain their comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

Recently, our team treated a 29-year-old man with metastatic colon cancer who was experiencing severe, persistent abdominal pain despite receiving high-dose oral morphine (80 mg).

The procedure, fluoroscopy-guided celiac plexus neurolysis, was led by Dr. Simon Assefa, Anesthesiologist, Critical Care and Pain Management Specialist, at Hope Oncology & Surgical Center.

This specialized interventional pain management procedure targets the nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals from abdominal organs.

Following the procedure, the patient’s reported pain score improved dramatically, decreasing from 9/10 before the procedure to 0–1/10 afterward.

This significant improvement highlights the potential of interventional pain management to relieve severe cancer-related pain, particularly when conventional medication alone does not provide adequate relief.

Compassionate Care Beyond Cancer Treatment

At Hope Oncology & Surgical Center, we recognize that effective cancer care includes both treating the disease and addressing the physical and emotional challenges patients face throughout their journey.

Through our multidisciplinary approach, we remain committed to providing appropriate pain management options that help improve patients’ comfort and quality of life.

Because every patient deserves not only access to cancer treatment, but also relief from suffering and care with dignity.
